About this event

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed how little some church buildings are used and accelerated discussion of how to steward these buildings and land in a better way. For some churches, building affordable housing provides one pathway to better utilize these physical resources and to address the growing affordability crisis in our cities across Canada. Building affordable housing can also be a piece of a plan leading to a renewed presence and purpose for a church in its neighborhood.

The goal for this gathering is to initiate church leadership teams in the process of developing affordable housing and to encourage groups to commit to a serious exploration of that process.

  1. Provide a theological vision for why developing affordable housing is a viable and responsible use of the lands we hold.
  2. Provide a step-by-step process in order to foster understanding and to reduce fears around creating affordable housing.
  3. Through telling affordable housing stories; providing competent responses to questions; and connecting church groups with non-profit developers, civic officials and financial institution reps, we hope to inspire church leaders to take a step forward in their commitment to creating affordable housing.
