Event description

Description

Many of us have been in a medical scanner and benefited from its use in medical diagnostics. But how many of us have considered how it works?

In this talk, Professor Budd will describe the maths behind modern medical imaging. such as CAT, MRI, and Ultrasounds, and illustrate how mathematics done in 1915 is now saving countless numbers of lives. In addition, Professor Budd will discuss how recent advances in mathematics are leading to much better images for doctors to use in their diagnoses; and how similar methods and ideas are being used in diverse applications elsewhere such as remote sensing, oil prospecting, crime detection, and saving the whales.

Chris Budd, OBE, is the Gresham Professor of Geometry. He is based at the University of Bath, where he is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Director of the Centre for Nonlinear Mechanics.
