Location: River District Neighbourhood Centre

Cost: Free!

In the fun and thrilling spirit of Halloween, we're hosting two 45 minute critter shows with Mike's Critters at the River District Neighbourhood Centre to teach you about some creepy crawlies and peculiar creatures. This is your chance to meet and feel a snake, tarantula, scorpion, albino hedgehog, hairless rat, and more!

Our friends at Save-On Foods have also partnered with us to bring you a pumpkin painting session, where you can create the scariest pumpkin to ward off ghosts, or an intricate art piece everyone will marvel at. You get to take the pumpkin home, and enter it into Save-On Foods' in-store pumpkin contest for a chance to win a sweet prize!

While we'd love to have as many people join in, we do have a maximum capacity at the Neighbourhood Centre, so registration is required for both adults and children who will be in attendance.

The critter show is open to everyone 3 years (36 months) and older, and pumpkin painting is open to all ages. Yes, adults can paint a pumpkin too!

Check out our FAQs below to learn more about the event and some more info on Mike and Save-On Foods' contest!

1) Will I be able to touch the critters?

The answer is yes, but only if you're comfortable with it! Mike does not want anyone touching their faces after touching the creatures as they are dirty. To make sure everyone's hands are clean and safe, we'll have hand sanitizer and wet wipes ready in addition to our washroom sinks.

2) Who is Mike, and why does he have all these critters?

Mike has always been an animal enthusiast at a very young age, growing up and taking care of pets in his family. As he grew older, he continually learned more about different animals, from working at a pet store to volunteering at the Vancouver Aquarium. Eventually, he started Mike's Critters to share his love of animals through education. Mike has rescued about one third of his critters, while others have been bred and born in his own home, or bought from local breeders.

3) What are the details of Save-On Foods' pumpkin contest, and do I have to enter my pumpkin?

You're more than welcome to take your masterpiece home, but it's not every Halloween you get to show off a prized pumpkin!

We're still finalizing the details of the pumpkin contest with Save-On Foods, so stay tuned!

4) I've never been to the River District Neighbourhood Centre, where is it?

River District is located in South Vancouver, with the Neighbourhood Centre being just past the intersection of Kerr (off of Marine Drive) and Riverwalk Ave. River District is a 10km drive from downtown, 10 min drive from Richmond and Burnaby, and 15 minutes from Metrotown.

5) How can I take transit to the River District Neighbourhood Centre?

Coming from Marine Dr. Skytrain Station you can catch the #100 going eastbound along SE Marine Dr. You will want to get off at SE Marine Drive at Kerr St. From there it's a short walk down hill on Kerr St. When using Google Maps, use the address 8683 Kerr St., Vancouver and it will bring you right where you need to be to get your heebie-jeebies on!

6) I will be driving to this event, is there parking available?

Yes! You can park in our River District/Romer's parking lot. If that is full, there is free street parking along East Kent Ave and Riverwalk Avenue and in our construction parking lot located past our Sales Centre (3302 North Arm Avenue.
