Event description

Join us on Saturday January 28, 2017, for the sixth annual A Journey Into Islam exhibition and open house. A Journey Into Islam is an initiative undertaken by the youth of the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre, designed to convey the core beliefs and practices of the Islamic faith in an interactive and comprehensible manner. We aim to create a comfortable environment in which guests are welcome to ask questions and engage in dialogue with members of our community.

The goal of the event is to showcase our faith through an evening full of interactive exhibits, guided tours of our beautiful Centre, and a tasty ethnic dinner. The exhibits are designed to address various elements of our faith, and to clear misconceptions. For more on what you can expect to see during the evening, visit our Exhibits page.

Muslims come from and reside in every corner of the world and practice the religion in a variety of ways—yet we are all guided by universal, unifying beliefs. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Inclusivity in Islam.’ From the time of Muhammad in 622 CE, Islam has promoted the inclusion of marginalized people within the Muslim community and society such as political foes, individuals with physical or mental disabilities, and racial and religious minorities to name a few.

Things to Keep in Mind

As mentioned above, modesty is a core value in Islam and is observed in many ways. Members of different genders, unless immediately related, will usually refrain from any form of physical contact. Please do not feel offended if, out of modesty, someone does not shake your hand. Don't worry, we’re still delighted to meet you!

Since you will be visiting a place of worship, we ask that you refrain from wearing anything too revealing. After all, it's January and we wouldn't want anyone feeling cold! We are also requesting that during the dinner portion of the event men and women sit on separate sides of the gymnasium. Volunteers will be able to guide you on the day of.

Don't worry if some of these rules confuse you—this event is meant to answer your questions!
