Madelaine has been involved with making moccasins since she was six years old when her mom first allowed her to use a needle. Her teenage years were full of craft activity when tourists and visitors to Moosonee started buying her products. In 1972, she got involved with a tourist outfitting operation where she spent years catering to tourists, hunters and visitors to Moose Factory, with souvenirs of moccasins, mitts, hats, dream catchers, beaded jewelry, etc. In 1986, with the help of funding from the government, she opened her first craft store beside her home in Moose Factory. A year later, she opened one at the Moose Cree Complex and the following years she opened one in Moosonee and another in Timmins. In 1991, she won the "Business Woman for the Year" award after being nominated by the Mushkogowuk Council. Since 1993, she has been involved in moccasin making workshops when she first started teaching Craft Making at Northern College and has since broadened her activities to include dream catcher making, moose hide mitt making, wraparounds making, fur hat making, among a few, to various audiences that include elementary and high schools, agencies and organizations as well as private workshops. Most currently she travels to various centers to present workshops on "A Mile in my Moccasins", a story of her residential school experience to an audience of people while they make their moccasins.
