Description

In this workshop with Arlene Westen, you will learn about Recycling, reclaiming and recovering materials while learning the basic skills of binding a multi-signature book!

Many elements of the book, cover, spine and text block will be created with salvaged materials, photocopies destined for the recycle bin, discarded papers, old calendars, drawings, letters, photographs or fabric scraps. Examples will be shown and participants will come away with a clear understanding of the tools, materials, and processes required for further book structures.

Audience: Adults and Teens with all levels of experience.

Supplies: Students are to bring:

Bone folder (available at Michaels or Art Supply stores)

Metal Ruler with a cork back (minimum 12” long)

Awl or T-pin with a sharp point

Xacto Knife with snap-off blades (extra blades)

Self-healing cutting mat or heavy cardboard surface to make cuts on

Bookbinding needles (blunt point preferably, like a darning type needle)

Small scissors

Natural bristle Brush for paste/glue

Something to use as a weight (10” x 12” minimum size) For example, an old catalogue or telephone book

(could be borrowed from the Leighton Centre!)

and Optional decorative item, photograph or embellishment for the front cover!

Artist/Instructor/Guide

Arlene Westen Evans is a multi-disciplinary artist, instructor and ‘art-trepreneur’. A practicing artist with over 30 years of experience, she graduated with two distinctly different baccalaureate degrees in art: (Fibre Art with Honours 2001) from the Alberta College of Art and Design and (Studio Arts, Honours with Great Distinction 2011) from the University of Lethbridge after an initial career in theatre as a costumer, dyer, and wardrobe headmistress. Arlene is especially supportive of endeavors that celebrate creative expression. She has facilitated numerous workshops for individuals and groups over the years and is co-owner of Evanescence Gallery and Art Studio in High River. Her practice involves surface design on paper and fabric, book art, encaustic painting, mixed-media collage, alternative photographic processes, and performance.
