Abandoned Alberta - Harvest Dark Skies 2017 - Photography Workshop with Scott Dimond and Robert Scott

Come join two of Alberta’s most dedicated and passionate abandoned landscape photographers for a weekend of fun, learning, experimenting, collaborating and adventuring as we explore the unique world of photographing abandoned homesteads. Scott & Robert have collectively spent countless hours driving the backroads of Alberta looking for abandoned homestead locations. They have now selected an area of Alberta that has a high concentration of unique and relatively untouched abandoned homesteads and invite you to spend a weekend photographing them. Additionally, this workshop will feature landscape and night photography at Red Rock Coulee with its collection of huge red boulders. Over this 3 day workshop, Scott & Robert will explain various techniques and guide participants in using those techniques at some of the best and most out of the way abandoned homestead locations imaginable.

This year we have selected a Harvest time weekend that coincides closely with a New Moon! This means that the skies will be dark and the stars will be bright. We will instruct you how to focus, compose and bring out the brilliant night sky. The Milky Way will also be visible this time of year so we have selected a unique location away from city lights. Sunset each day will be around 7:30pm and will provide excellent light from about 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Sunrise each day will be around 7:00am and provide excellent light from about 6:00am to 8:00am. Become a night owl and join us for this unique experience.

Afternoon Sept. 15 – Classroom (Friday, 12pm-4:00pm):

Scott & Robert will start the fun-filled weekend with a slideshow showcasing their Abandoned Alberta work followed by a presentation on various gear, exposure concepts, and focusing techniques for effective sunrise/sunset, light painting and moon/night photography. How to shoot for Exposure Blending or HDR will also be discussed.

Evening Sept. 15 – Abandoned Sunset #1 (Friday, 5pm-11pm): The classroom portion will be immediately followed by several hours of in-the-field photography at several pre-scouted abandoned locations where participants can put into practice the concepts discussed earlier in the evening.

Morning Sept. 16 – Abandoned Sunrise #1 (Saturday, 5:30am-9:30am): Scott & Robert will continue our light-chasing marathon by taking participants to a location specifically selected for its suitability for sunrise photography. After sunrise, we may visit other locations while we make our way back to town. Participants will then be encouraged to have some breakfast and have a nap.

Afternoon Sept. 16 – Classroom (Saturday, 1pm-3:30pm): After everyone has got some sleep and gone out for a bite of lunch, the group will meet up for further presentations and an optional image critique session. Scott & Robert will continue the education portion of the workshop as they present advanced techniques including the use of flash and shooting with specific post-production concepts in mind. Participants can optionally provide images from the previous sessions to be displayed and critiqued. Participants should then grab some dinner in preparation for the evening activities.

Evening Sept. 16 – Abandoned Sunset #2 (Saturday, 4:30pm-11pm)
: We will then continue with several hours of in-the-field photography at several pre-scouted abandoned locations.

Morning Sept. 17 – Abandoned Sunrise #2 (Sunday, 5:30am-9:30am): Scott & Robert will lead our sleep-deprived group to another location selected specifically for sunrise. After sunrise, we may visit other locations while we make our way back to town. Participants will then be encouraged to have some breakfast, get some sleep and then, depending on their arrangements, check out of their rooms.

Afternoon Sept. 17 – Post Production/Wrap up (Sunday 1pm-3pm): After lunch, the group will meet for a presentation by Scott & Robert on how they each approach post-production. The selection, adjustments and conversion of images using Lightroom will be shown along with various Photoshop tips & techniques. The methods used for Exposure Blending or HDR processing will also be shown. This will be followed by a Q&A session before the workshop comes to an end.

About Robert Scott:

Robert Scott is a professional landscape photographer based in Calgary, Alberta.

"I fell into photography by accident while exploring abandoned buildings along the secondary highways of southern Alberta. Since then, I've been learning everything I can about photography. I love what I do as it allows me to explore exciting new locations and connect with unique people. Photography has opened up a world of creativity and exploration. I have been fortunate enough to capture the beauty of Iceland, the deserts of Death Valley and the culture of Africa. As a martial arts instructor of over 20 years, I've now been able to converge my passion for instruction into photography workshops and seminars."

About Scott Dimond

Scott Dimond is a photographer and lecturer based in Calgary, Alberta.

Scott is admittedly obsessive at times (his wife would tell you it’s all the time). He has been known to go to extreme lengths to create an image that is stuck in his mind. Sometimes that means engaging in a lot of research and planning, or driving for 7 hours back to a location just to take one photo, or doing things like sleeping in the backcountry at -30 C. Sometimes it just means putting up with the strange looks from bystanders.

Scott's portfolio contains a number of large panoramic images and in June, Scott was named 2015 Panoramic Photographer of the Year (Kolor) selected from over 2800 entries, an award he is particularly proud of.
