About this Event

The 2021 ABC Copyright Conference Committee invites you all to join us, free of charge, for this year’s conference which will be held virtually on May 5th, 6th and 7th starting at 11:00 am EST each day. We recognize the past year has been one of unprecedented change and has presented unique challenges and opportunities for how we approach copyright issues. The program for the conference showcases a broad range of topics that can speak to the current and future state of copyright in Canada.

We’ve secured some very exciting Keynote Speakers for the 2021 conference. The planning committee is pleased to announce that we will be hearing from Johanna Anderson (University of Gloucestershire), Brewster Kahle (The Internet Archive), and a whole panel of inspiring copyright experts and practitioners.

The formal schedule is still in the works but we’re pleased to be able to share more information about the sessions with you:

  • Connecting the Copyright Community of Practice in a time of crisis
  • The CUSMA term extension: policy options and library advocacy as we reckon with prospect of a 20 year freeze on new works entering the Canadian public domain
  • Copyright Practices & Approaches at Canadian Post-Secondaries: A Follow-up Survey
  • Copyright and learning management systems: Lessons learned from conducting a copyright audit of LMS course resources
  • Visual Plagiarism & Copyright
  • Creating media-rich course materials for a digital classroom
  • The Creative Fringe: Street Art, Nonfungible Tokens (NFTs), and Emerging Issues in Intellectual Property
  • Picture it: Copyright and Images in Canada, 2021
  • Copyright in Fire Insurance Plans
  • CFLA Copyright Committee Update
  • Exploring Copyright: How an 8-part Journey Brought Copyright Literacy Down to Earth

The conference will start at 11:00 am EST daily, sessions are planned to end no later than 4:00 pm EST daily. We’ve built in time for breaks and social activities and we hope you’ll take the opportunity to join us for them. We’ve also created an ABC Copyright Slack community where you can come to chat about copyright, and whatever else strikes your fancy:

All sessions and social activities will take place in Zoom. Zoom links will be sent out to all conference registrants ahead of the conference.

No Zoom account yet? No problem, register for one for free here:

We’re pleased to announce that this year’s virtual ABC Copyright Conference is free to anyone who wants to register. We welcome anyone interested in learning more about copyright to come and join us. We hope that students, staff, and other groups who may not usually get to join us get to take advantage of this year’s format and lack of cost.
