Aboriginal Education Opportunities

8:30-9:00 Bannock and tea/coffee will be served.

Session 1A 9:00-10:30 History of the Sto:lo Drum
Presented by Chris Silver

This interactive session will be taught in a circle. Learn about the history of drumming for Sto:lo people, the stories connected to the drum, the meaning of drums and songs. In the last part of this session you will also be taught the Salmon Song.

Session 1B 10:45-12:15 Salish Weaving
Presented by Jackie Spathelfer

Learn about the history and importance of weaving in Sto:lo culture. Learn how to warp the loom and how to instruct students to create a cuff using a small loom. You will leave with samples and ideas to start in your classroom.

Session C 9:00-12:15 Literacy Strategies to Support Young Readers
Presented by Darlene MacDonald and Tina Maphoso

Learn strategies such as setting the stage for a positive experience, pre-reading strategies, comprehension strategies and play based activities to support early readers. Make and take activities and samples of Aboriginal literacy books will be provided as give aways.

Session D 9:00-12:15 Traditional Cooking
Presented by Chris Kelly and Brian Point

The secondary curriculum for Food Studies encourages teachers and students to explore First Peoples food protocols, including land stewardship, harvesting/gathering, ceremonial uses, and preserving methods for traditional foods and cooking. Learn to cook several dishes and the teachings about these traditional dishes (may include Eulochon, salmon, traditional stews).


12:15 A full lunch will not be served, however, enjoy some samples of the foods from the traditional cooking class.

The Ray and Millie Silver Library will be open throughout the day.

Aboriginal staff will be available in the afternoon for discussions and demonstrations.
