Event description

Description

In recent years, efforts have been devoted to enhancing the quality of electricity supply to mission-critical customers, a benefit evolving out of smart grid technologies.

In this area of work, distribution companies are working to reduce momentary power interruptions and enhance their service quality beyond the North American standards.

Toronto Hydro supplies its customers with electricity that meets and exceeds North American standards of power quality. However, some customers with sensitive equipment (such as hospitals and manufacturing facilities) can still benefit from a higher supply quality beyond the required standards. Enhancing power quality for these customers, to avoid momentary power interruptions, will improve their performance and minimize the impact on their mission-critical processes and equipment.

In this seminar, Dr. Omid Alizadeh, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Ryerson University, will discuss the outcomes of CUE’s collaboration with Toronto Hydro in this area. Drawing on case studies, including energy storage implementation studies and utilization of reclosers in distribution systems, Dr. Alizadeh will present new enhanced power quality standards for customers with sensitive equipment within Toronto Hydro's distribution system, as well as technical solutions to meet these new standards.

We are delighted to welcome Gary Thompson, Supervisor, Generation, Planning and System Studies at Toronto Hydro, who will introduce Dr. Alizadeh.
