Event description

Description

Our second speaker of the series, Phillip Carter, is well positioned to guide us through a closer examination of the architecture of the classic Beaux-Arts Carnegie library and the challenges these buildings present in being upgraded to modern library standards. A registered architect, he is also both Urban Planner and Heritage Consultant, having graduated from the University of Manitoba and University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, a registered member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals and a long-time member of the ACO.

In his architectural practice (established 1972), he is best known for his library expertise, having completed over 60 public library projects across Ontario. These include retrofits and additions for several Carnegie Libraries, including libraries in Woodstock, Hespeler. Campbellford, Port Hope and in Toronto, the unique Wychwood and Beaches libraries designed by Eden Smith. Carter formed part of the team assembled to complete the recent renovations for the Kitchener Public Library.

Lectures are hosted at WalterFedy, 675 Queen Street South, Kitchener and begin at 7 pm. Plenty of parking is available and the building is accessible.

Consider joining the ACO... Through education and advocacy, the ACO encourages the conservation and re-use of structures, districts and landscapes of architectural, historic, and cultural significance.

Join us for another year of quality lectures (at no cost to members), walking and driving tours; receive our newsletters, email communication messages, and from the provincial headquarters Acorn in a Nutshell, and ACO's quality journal ACORN (issued twice a year). ACO North Waterloo Region has had a representative on the Waterloo Region Heritage Foundation and partners with other heritage groups.
