Event description

Description

Dive deeper into live electroacoustic performance...

Join us as we dive deeper into the creative worlds of sound designers with Acoustic Territories. On September 28 one of Canada’s most in-demand composers, Stefan Smulovitz, along with collaborator Lara Abadir, will take us on a sonic adventure in three parts.

The first section features an immersive surround sound set taking you through The Dolphin Hotel as described by Haruki Murakami in his novel Dance Dance Dance.

Stefan has been taking dance classes since the age of 45 (He is almost 47 now). In the second set we will see him in a reversal of his normal role – he will be dancing instead of accompanying. He has never experienced the effects of his own sound creations on his body. Lara Abadir, a trained dancer will take control and remix Stefan’s music to sonically guide him through his first solo dance – Dance, Dance, Dance.

Finally, the third set will see Stefan manipulating and layering Murakami’s text performed by Lara.

Don’t miss this feast for your ears and eyes in the intimate setting of the Fishbowl on Granville Island. With a casual atmosphere, you will have the chance to share your experience and to celebrate acoustic artistic practice.

Stefan Smulovitz (composer, violist & laptop artist) has performed with leading improvisers around the world and created more than 60 live film scores. Stefan is recognized for his groundbreaking interactive work with Radix Theatre. Kenaxis — Stefan’s game-changing music software — is used around the world and his Mad Scientist Machine LED light cueing system has opened new possibilities for global collaborations. Recently Stefan travelled to Bhutan to collect sounds and create a score for the award-winning documentary “Power of the River”. www.stefansmulovitz.ca

Lara Abadir (Antwerp, Belgium) began her artistic career with a degree in Filmmaking (BFA, England) and Dance Theatre (SEEDS – CobosMika Co., Spain). During 2 academic years, Lara was the principal Movement for Actors instructor at Artactors Queralt while continuing her advanced training in contemporary dance and movement theatre in Barcelona, Spain. She arrived in Vancouver in 2012 to further explore the intersection between contemporary performance, video art and sound design through the interdisciplinary MFA program at SFU (2015). Lara has created and staged several hybrid performance works, both abroad and in Vancouver.
