Event description

Description

Did you know that 2 out of three 3 children in Manitoba are not walking or cycling to school? For decades, more students have been getting to school by vehicle than walking or cycling. As a result we're seeing heavy traffic congestion, safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists, a decrease in physical activity levels, and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and localized air pollution.

We’re inviting parents, guardians, and community members to join us for a free information session on active school travel and independent mobility by Green Action Centre's Active and Safe Routes to School program and two guest speakers. You will learn about the Active and Safe Routes to School program, the benefits of walking and cycling to school, and strategies for overcoming common barriers.

Green Action Centre is happy to welcome two special guest speakers to share their stories and experience:

Katharina Nuss - Started the Bring Free Range Parenting Law to Manitoba petition (which has over 8,000 signatures!) after a visit from CFS for letting her children walk down the street and into their local bakery independently ("They left my sight for about 3 minutes"). Katharina will share her story and her efforts to change The Child and Family Services Act, which states that a child is in need of protection if, “being under the age of 12 years, [the child] is left unattended and without reasonable provision being made for the supervision and safety of the child.”

Tanya Hoover - Tanya Hoover is a Registered Social Worker who holds a Master of Social Work degree. She is a Certified Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy. She holds a certificate in Early Childhood Education, and has taken extensive training in attachment-based models for supporting children and parents/caregivers, including being certified in the Circle of Security model for individual therapy. She is also a Registered Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator.
