5:00 PM COCKTAILS & SILENT AUCTION

6:00 PM SEATED DINNER

(ACTLA cannot guarantee seating at the same table unless multiple tickets are purchased together)

The sparkle of signature cocktails and jazz music by the Dave Babcock Trio. The buzz of a curated silent auction. The treat of a fabulous sit-down dinner, and even more fabulous speakers. All of this plus, we hope, your company, at the Women’s Legal Forum gala event to be held February 22, 2018.

ACTLA’s Women’s Legal Forum originated in 2013 to create a collegial environment for female lawyers to meet and support one another; to hear and learn from the inspiring examples of highly respected role models; and to promote worthy initiatives. All three objectives will be amply met at the gala, which features conviviality, fine dining, and the opportunity for networking; the presentations of two prominent Canadian women in the law, Marie Henein and Rumana Monzur; and the chance to support Equal Voice, an organization dedicated to helping women become elected to all levels of political office in Canada. We anticipate and welcome guests of all genders, professions and persuasions to this fourth WLF event.

Featuring Keynote Speaker Marie Henein

Marie Henein is a highly acclaimed lawyer whose experience includes a wide range of regulatory, criminal and quasi-criminal litigation. Ms. Henein received her LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1989 and holds a Masters in Law from Columbia University. Among her vast professional accomplishments, she is also a frequent lecturer and was an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. She is co-editor of numerous criminal law texts and periodicals.

Ms. Henein has been counsel on a variety of high profile cases and was chosen by her peers to be included on the 2010 list of the Best Lawyers in Canada in the category of Criminal Defense. She has also been repeatedly named by Canadian Lawyer Magazine as one of Canada's most influential lawyers. This year, Ms. Henein was the recipient of the The Law Society Medal for outstanding service to the administration of justice.

Also Featuring Rumana Monzur

Rumana Monzur is a Fulbright scholar and was an Assistant Professor at Dhaka University, in Bangladesh. In 2011, while pursuing higher studies at the University of British Columbia against her husband's wishes, Ms. Monzur was brutally assaulted and blinded by him when she returned to Bangladesh on a visit. Ms. Monzur's case made international headlines about domestic violence and women's fundamental rights to education.

Following the vicious attack, Ms. Monzur returned to Canada as a blind student and completed her Masters in Political Science. After successfully defending her Master's thesis, she challenged herself yet again by embarking on the study of law. She received her law degree this year and is currently articling with DLA Piper in Vancouver. Ms. Monzur's courageous battle to overcome adversity and to reclaim her life is inspirational.
