About this Event

Celebrate the completion of one of Adad Hannah's largest community projects!

This 144-page colour publication takes you behind the scenes of Hannah’s 2019 community project and exhibition of the same name at Richmond Art Gallery. In addition to dozens of images documenting its production, the publication includes contributions by Nan Capogna (Curator, Richmond Art Gallery); Evan Lee (Visual artist, Vancouver); Jennifer Fisher (Professor of Art and Curatorial Studies, York University) and Jim Drobnick (Associate Professor, OCAD ); and Erin Silver (Assistant professor UBC – The Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory).

Adad Hannah will introduce a time-lapse video documenting the month-long project working with over fifty volunteers in the making of The Decameron Retold.

Books will be available for purchase. Light refreshments and cash bar on site.

Free admission, but RSVP required.

About the artist:

Adad Hannah was born in New York in 1971, spent his childhood in Israel and England, and moved to Vancouver in the early 1980s. The artist is well known for his photographic and video works that explore the performative and cinematic potential of tableaux vivants. He has produced community-based projects around the world, from Senegal to Australia, the United States, and across Canada.

The Decameron Retold was commissioned by curator Nan Capogna of the Richmond Art Gallery, and is Hannah’s largest-scale community project to date. For this project, Hannah created a series of photographs and video tableaux vivants (living pictures) based on the 14th century literary work The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. The elements in the exhibition were built, painted, and sewn with volunteer community members who also participated as models and contributed stories to lay over The Decameron’s structure. All the components of The Decameron Retold were built in the Richmond Art Gallery during the month of January 2019.
