Hosted via Zoom. Participants will be able to attend online or call in over the phone.

Course Description

This workshop will cover information on addiction and substance use, including viewing substance use on a continuum, the self-medication hypothesis, substance use effects, how people make change, abstinence and harm reduction approaches, treatment options in Ontario, recovery concepts, and friends and family work. Additionally, the second session will contain a presentation and Q&A with a family member with lived experience. This workshop will cover core principles and practices that will enhance what you already know.

Please note that this workshop was previously titled Understanding Substance Use.

  • Develop a deeper understanding of substance use.
  • Explore work through a concurrent disorder lens.

Facilitator Biographies

Cheryl Robinson

Cheryl Robinson first entered the helping professions over twenty-five years ago by working at a shelter for men experiencing homelessness. It was there at the shelter that she became aware of the devastating cycle of addiction. Cheryl has been offering counselling for individuals concerned with their mental health and addictions for over seventeen years and has been a registered psychotherapist since 2015. Cheryl worked at a community addiction centre for fifteen years before serving as the Clinical Director of a residential treatment centre for two years. Currently, Cheryl works at Hope for Today Counselling in private practice and offers presentations in the community to help reduce stigma concerning mental health and addictions.

Ashley Davidson

Ashley Davidson has been working in the field of addiction and mental health for almost 10 years. Ashley started working as a case manager with clients struggling with homelessness, addiction, and mental health. Ashley focused many years on intake supports at an outpatient community addiction agency where they learned fundamental knowledge around addiction. In 2020, Ashley moved to an admission coordinator position at an inpatient treatment centre that focuses on trauma and addiction for first responders, active military, and veterans. Ashley is passionate about supporting clients in navigating systems and accessing addiction and mental health supports.

Who should attend this workshop series?

This workshop series is designed specifically for helping professionals. We define "helping professional" as anyone in a position of interacting with people in providing a service.

How many people can attend?

Registration for this workshop series has been capped at 35 participants.

What is a level one core QoC workshop series?

This refers to a workshop series that is a part of QoC's core curriculum and is offered at a more basic level, though it can be beneficial to anyone regardless of their experience.

Do I need to attend both of the sessions?

Yes, attendees will receive certificates of attendance after participating in both sessions and filling out a post-course evaluation.

Will these sessions be recorded?

No, these sessions will not be recorded in order to maintain the privacy of participants. The session slides, however, will be sent out.

What is your refund policy?

We can offer refunds up to seven days before the first session. Eventbrite's fee is nonrefundable. After this period, we can accept substitutions. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
