About this event
As part of the global strategy to balance climate and energy objectives to meet global demand, development diversification of energy sources is required, including Hydrogen, SMRs and traditional energy sources. This presents unique opportunities and challenges for Indigenous nations, industry, and investors. Across North America, proper implementation of Indigenous values and respect for Indigenous rights and interests must form the basis for which we drive investment opportunities, energy access to global nations, and a path towards a more sustainable and equitable energy future.
On Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, the First Nations Major Project Coalition will return with an all-new episode of the Indigenous Sustainable Investment Series: Addressing the Global Energy Crisis From An Indigenous Lens. Expert speakers will convene to highlight trending investment models, Indigenous equity ownership examples, and lessons learned through developing new business relationships that can help to build more responsible, sustainable, and successful partnerships between Indigenous nations and the private sector across North America.
Sponsored by FNMPC’s Sustaining Partners, Cenovus, CIBC, Colliers Project Leaders, COWI, Gowling WLG, Arcadis IBI Group, New Gold, and Pattern Energy, this is a must-attend event.
Background
The Toward Net Zero by 2050 conference hosted by the First Nations Major Project Coalition (Canada) and First Peoples Worldwide (US) last April in Vancouver, Canada presented ideas that together laid new ground on what Indigenous nations, industry sectors, and governments can each do to achieve this solution and vision: a new reality in which Indigenous nations own, or are presented with the opportunity to own, equity ownership in net zero-focused energy and climate solutions infrastructure projects.
Yet questions remain for project proponents, capital providers and Indigenous communities: HOW do all parties identify, define, and incorporate Indigenous values in a major project? Issues of capital access, regulatory hurdles, deal structures, Indigenous commercial governance, shared traditional territory, and multiple Indigenous communities must all be taken into consideration.
Our expert panel will share key insights and best practices on Indigenous net zero participation and project ownership across sectors and how, more than ever, Indigenous leadership can power a values-driven economy.
