If you've always longed to draw and paint, this gentle introduction to basic art skills is for you. See a dramatic improvement in sketching, painting and creative skills. Includes a study of historical and contemporary paintings as reference.Develop the ability to think and see as an artist. For beginners and those with experience.

A03 - Paint Big (Afternoon)

Time: 1 - 4 pm

Let go of all of your creative inhibitions and have fun painting something big and bold. Use large canvases and large brushes to create your own masterpieces. All levels are welcome and a sense of adventure is encouraged. Materials required include acrylic paints of three colours or more and a canvas of 30"x40" or bigger.

In this intermediate class students continue to develop their drawing skills through the study of increasingly challenging set-ups and more advanced subject matter. Participants will learn how to handle tricky drawing problems such as drapery, organic objects, and reflective surfaces. We will also cover effective strategies for drawing the human figure and portraits.This course is designed to increase the student’s confidence, and give her or him the knowledge to take on any drawing challenge: a great class for those who have mastered the basics and are ready to take their drawing skills to the next level.

A54 - Pop-Up Pottery

Calling past and present students –a pottery class for students of all skill levels in both throwing and hand-building. Demonstrations will be offered based on individual needs as they arise, including hand-forming methods, potter's wheel techniques, decorating and glazing. There will be an open ended flow of information. The goal is for each student to identify his or her personal direction.

A55 - Crafting Your Own Pots and Glazes

Time: 7 - 10 pm

This class is an opportunity to make pots and glazes. The object of this class is to adjust a glaze to compliment the forms you like to make. Don’t be afraid. Students will work in pairs to make glaze tests. The experiments will be very easy to do and much of the mysterious technical jargon will be explained. We will then mix some larger batches of glaze to apply to the pots made during the course. You will end up with pots covered in glaze which you had a hand in formulating. Some experience is helpful but intrepid beginners are welcome.

A79 - Painting From Your Photos

Bring your own photos to class and let your creativity and imagination transform them into unique paintings. We will work from personal as well as found imagery, and learn how to paint either a convincing or fantastical narrative space – the choice will be yours. The instructor will help broaden your understanding of the principals of paint handling, colour theory, tonality, composition, perspective, human anatomy and proper use of materials. Students may work in oil or acrylic paint. This is a course for all levels, and a sense of adventure is encouraged.

W15 - Modern Pendant Workshop (Age 16+)

Wed Feb 1 - 22 Time: 7 - 10 pm

Design with bold shapes and clean lines! Construct a one of a kind pendant and learn basic metal fabrication techniques. In this workshop, students will be using sterling silver sheet and wire to create an abstract pendant inspired by the lines of modern architecture. Fabrication techniques including sawing, piercing, filing, soldering and finishing will be covered in this workshop. There is an additional fee of $45 payable to the instructor during the first class for all materials including the in-class use of a basic tool kit.

This 3 evening workshop offers students the opportunity to gain experience in the basics of woodcarving, wood burning and staining. Students will carve and detail their choice of one of 4 different caricature dogs - a great beginner carving project. An additional material fee of $20 for all materials and shared use of tools is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Explore the exciting world of stenciling and discover for yourself why this time-honoured technique is taking the do-it-yourself market by storm. Have you wanted to create your own home number plaque, an inspiring wall saying on canvas or add a monogram to a piece of furniture? Let decorative artisan Michael Wiens walk you through each step. Through the use of laser-cut mylar stencils, students will create their own sample projects using custom botanical and monogram stencils. At the end of this workshop students will be provided with a sample pack of stencils for practice at home. Price of class includes all materials and stencils.

Join decorative artisan Michael Wiens in this hands-on workshop that will have you looking at old furniture in a whole new shade. Students will be given an opportunity to explore new and innovative decorative paints and techniques. Students are asked to bring one item from home (ie; chair, picture frames or a small table) that they will work on during the workshop. Michael will walk you through each step, answering questions and offering advice as needed.

ART SUPPLIES: Adult students must supply their own materials unless noted otherwise. Course outlines containing the supply lists will be available on the AGB website under Education registration page.

If you are not able to view or obtain the course outlines from the website, please contact Heather Borsellino through the contact information listed below. 

ATTIRE: Please dress in clothing that reflects the nature of the activity.  Your clothing may get messy from the materials and mediums utilized in your class.  Also, closed-toe shoes are mandatory. 

ALLERGIES OR SPECIAL NEEDS? Important - Notify us on your regsitration if the student has an allergy, health concerns, or a learning disability that could impact participation in the class.  We would like to remind you that we are a nut-free facility.  Please ensure that any food or drink items that you bring into the AGB are free of nut products.  We appreciate your cooperation.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY Refunds are cheques payable to registrants, subject to the following:

1.     The AGB reserves the right to cancel or combine classes if minimum enrollment is not met.

2..   If a course is cancelled, registrants will be notified up to a week prior to the start date of the class.

3.     Requests for refunds must be made in writing to Studio Education Coordinator: registration@artgalleryofburlington.com

4.     No refunds will be given after the 2nd week of a course.

5.    Except for courses canceled by the gallery, all refunds will be subject to a twenty-five dollar administration charge and a pro-rated deduction for classes up to AND including the date of the refund request.

6.    Refunds will be issued within six weeks of the cancellation. 

7.   Save your receipt for tax purposes.
