Course Objectives:

  • To acquire basic fascia physiology, and the relationship with TCM Meridian theory
  • To apply the theory to various pain syndromes in upper/lower quadrant
  • To discuss and compare the TCM treatment approach and the western neuro-anatomical approach in various conditions
  • To be able to locate and insert needles in a set of acupuncture points specific to FEAT approach but not so commonly taught in most of the acupuncture short courses in Canada with practical hand-on clinical skills lab.

Background

Over the past 10 years there has been an increasing interest in treating various pain syndromes with acupuncture or dry needling.  Many courses have been developed to teach Canadian physiotherapists how to apply and incorporate acupuncture into their daily practices.  Most of these courses are based on a neuro-anatomical approach (or the Western approach).

Relevance to Physiotherapy Practice

In this course, we will introduce to participants the Fascia- Energy Acupuncture technique for immediate pain relief.   The Fascia-Energy Acupuncture Technique (FEAT) is based on the current understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine Meridian theory, systematic reviews of the effectiveness of acupuncture, research in fascia physiology and research in trigger points and anatomy.  Based on the FEAT approach, different patterns of needling application for axial and extremity will be discussed.  Acupuncture points outside the neuro-anatomical approach will be taught as well.  The FEAT and the new set of points will enrich the existing list of acupuncture points that participants have already acquired and provide alternative choices for them to choose when treating various pain syndromes.

The difference in this course from other courses is that we will teach based on current understanding of TCM Meridian theory and translate it using neuro-anatomy knowledge. The content of this course will enrich therapists who practice acupuncture using Western approach.

If you cannot help your patients achieve immediate pain relief, this course will certainly help you to improve your technique and attain better outcomes for your patients.
