Brand new workshops!

Join us for this brand new workshop series featuring Saanich Inlet geochemical and sequencing data from the U. of British Columbia's very own Dr. Steven Hallam. Get hands-on experience in R while exploring these rich data and answering novel research questions in microbial ecology!

About the Workshop Series

In this workshop, we provide a brief introduction to RStudio, then delve into data manipulation using 'dplyr' and graphics with 'ggplot'. We teach different ways to manipulate data in tabular and text forms as well as the critical concepts underlying the grammar of graphics and how they are implemented in ggplot. We will use RStudio, a powerful but user-friendly R environment, and teach you how to use it effectively.

This is a condensed offering of our "Introduction to R", "Working with data", and "Graphics with ggplot" workshop series.

You will learn:

  • the concept of a data vector, and how to use vectorized functions,
  • how to organize your data vectors into data frames,
  • to import data from a file into R,
  • to create subsets of rows or columns from data frames using dplyr,
  • to select pieces of an object by indexing using element names or position,
  • to change your data frames between wide and narrow formats,
  • to create various types of graphics,
  • to modify the various features of a graphic, and
  • to save your graphic in various formats

Workshop 1: Monday, March 19th, 2:00 - 4:00pm

Workshop 2: Wednesday, March 21st, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Workshop 3: Friday, March 23rd, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

The Ecosystem Services, Commercialization Platforms and Entrepreneurship (ECOSCOPE) industrial stream NSERC CREATE training program provides UBC undergraduate and graduate students, and post-docs with the skills needed to translate environmental sequence information derived from studying microbial communities in natural and engineered ecosystems into commercial and entrepreneurial activities. ECOSCOPE increases capacity for highly qualified personnel (HQP) training in microbial ecology and biological engineering, allowing for team internships in start-up environments, and providing professional and entrepreneurial training to augment research skills and empower HQP to commercialize their innovations.

Although emanating from the Life Science Institute (LSI), ECOSCOPE defines a collaborative network between multiple departments on the UBC campus spanning basic and applied science (Chemical and Biological EngineeringChemistryComputer ScienceEarth Ocean and Atmospheric SciencesForestryMicrobiology and ImmunologyMining Engineering, and Statistics).
