Event description

Description

What is Motivational Interviewing?

Increasing attention is being paid to the benefits of an evidence-based, Motivational Interviewing (MI) communication style to enhance engagement and build motivation for change across a range of populations and practice areas such as: substance use and mental health; child and family services; physical rehabilitation services; and education and prevention programming. MI is a respectful and compassionate way of supporting people in making sometimes very difficult changes in their lives, and has also been found to be helpful when working cross-culturally.

Advanced Motivational Interviewing for Helping Professionals

This course builds on nine years of a successful interprofessional, multi-level Motivational Interviewing program with UBC Continuing Studies.

Advanced Motivational Interviewing is a two-day skills-based training that builds on the learning in Level 1 Introductory MI. Learners continue to refine their skills, increase MI proficiencies, decrease MI inconsistent behaviours, and practice strategies to support learning sustainability. Learners will be introduced to a fidelity coding tool (MITI) and tape and code their own MI practice conversation.

Prerequisite: Introductory Motivational Interviewing for Helping Professionals or equivalent practice and experience is required for this course.

Who should attend?

Helping professionals who support others in making health and related changes, such as, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, counsellors, speech language pathologists, dieticians, dentists, nurses and physicians.

Learning Methods

Drawing on the research on how to learn MI, a variety of methods are used, including small and large group discussion, didactic presentation, reflective practice written exercises, real play/role play with a partner, observation (live & DVD), triad practice with an observer, team consultation, and taping and coding a practice conversation.
