Event description

Description

Speaker:
Alex Razoumov, WestGrid Training & Visualization Coordinator, Compute Canada

Workshop Description:
In this full day workshop, I will teach visualization of very large datasets on remote HPC clusters. Topics covered include:

  • running ParaView in client-server mode
  • running batch rendering jobs
  • recommendations on running on cluster GPUs vs multiple CPUs
  • handling and loading of multi-GB datasets
  • writing and debugging of ParaView Python scripts

I will also cover some advanced animation techniques that could be useful with both remote and desktop rendering.

This workshop is intended to be Part 1 of advanced ParaView training. In a future session, I will present Part 2, which will study ParaView Cinema and in-situ visualization with Catalyst.

Session Requirements:

  • This workshop will feature interactive hands-on exercises, so you will need to bring a laptop and power cord you can use during the session.

  • You must have a Compute Canada account to participate in the exercises and log in into the Cedar and Graham computing clusters http://bit.ly/2iOOvz4. You can register for free a Compute Canada account here: https://ccdb.computecanada.ca/account_application

  • Prior to the event, please install ParaView 5.3.x (where 'x' could be anything) on the laptop you will be using for the session. To install ParaView, click here to visit the ParaView website and choose v5.3 from the 'Version' dropdown menu on that page (located under 'Get the software').

Other Notes:

  • Extensive experience with ParaView is not required. Some prior knowledge of ParaView's GUI will be assumed, however, I will start slowly and adjust the content and pace of the session according to the audience's ParaView experience level.
