ADVANCING READING AND WRITING SKILLS with Middle and Senior Years Students
Thu, 27 April 2017, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM CDT
Penny Kittle teaches high school English in North Conway, New Hampshire, and acts as a K–12 literacy coach for the Conway School District. Penny has taught fulltime in grades 3–12 and for the last four years in the University of New Hampshire Summer Literacy Institutes for teachers. Penny has been a teacher in residence, co-teaching and planning alongside teachers, including a recent experience with the River East Transcona School Division in Winnipeg. Penny has authored numerous books, including Write Beside Them, which won the NCTE James Britton Award in 2009; Inside Writing, co-authored with Donald Graves; and Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers.
Since Penny Kittle delivered her workshop in 2014, many Manitoba ASCD members suggested having her back for a follow-up session. In this workshop, Penny will extend her ideas about building community in the secondary classroom. She will draw on her teaching experiences, and recent experiences from her author residency at a Winnipeg high school, to demonstrate workshop approaches to writing that will work in our local context. She will illustrate the conditions that grow literate readers and writers, such as time, choice, modelling, and feedback. She will also advocate strongly for teachers to balance choice and assigned reading, and provide helpful illustrations of how choice reading can be successful.
