From the early tentative steps of glider and kite flying, to the mighty roar of the massive Saturn rockets, Canadian Aviation began on February 23, 1909, when Canada's first pilot and the first man to fly in the British Empire, J. A. D. McCurdy, rose majestically into the air from the frozen surface of Bras d'Or lake, Baddeck, Nova Scotia in the Silver Dart, an aeroplane he had designed and built with the aid of his fellow associates, who made up the nascent but brilliant Aerial Experiment Association.
