Event description
Affirming Leaders Day in Calgary - a one day gathering focused LGBTQ2S+ inclusivity and engagement in faith communities and beyond.

About this Event

Special Guest Keynote!

About Affirming Leaders Day:

Most of us have heard of 'Affirming' faith communities, or we may even be part of one. These communities commit to being fully inclusive of LGBTQ2S+ folks in all areas of church life. Or we may be a part of an organization that values inclusivity and wants to go deeper.

Becoming more inclusive or affirming has its own joys and challenges, and leadership in these intersections can feel daunting or isolating.

  • How do we become better advocates, allies, and leaders?
  • How do we rekindle and connect with others along the way, remembering that we aren't alone?

Join us for a chance to re-energize our individual and collective journeys through this fun and interactive one day gathering.

ALL individuals from any organization or interest are invited to attend. You do not have to be part of a church to attend. All individuals, leaders, clergy, staff, committee members, and volunteers from any faith background or denomination are welcome to attend. Whether you consider yourself a 'leader' or not, you definitely are, and you are warmly invited to attend.

Let's grow and connect alongside others who are interested in deepening and sharing their wisdom!

Keynote from Austen Hartke:

A Strong Foundation: What You Need to Know About LGBTQ+ Identities

While many people know that supporting LGBTQIP2sA+ people is the right thing to do, we often don't know how to help. We wonder what all those letters mean, who uses what pronouns, how sexuality is different from gender, and why any of this matters if we agree that love for our neighbour is the bottom line. Whether you're new to this conversation or whether you've been working in LGBTQ+ communities for years, this lecture will help you build a strong base that will leave you better prepared to support your siblings.

Workshop with Austen Hartke:

Understanding Gender Diversity in Scripture

You might be familiar with the "clobber passages" used against people of different sexualities, but how much do you know about the texts that talk about gender? Have you ever wondered what people mean by the phrase "biblical manhood" or "biblical womanhood," or why we should think about the pronouns we use for God? Ever heard about the time Jesus spoke positively about gender-expansive people? Join Austen for a whirlwind tour through gender diversity in the Bible and find out how these stories can change and strengthen our faith.

Speaker Tony Snow:

Affirming Radical Unity:

At the core of our work is a struggle to repair and reclaim the beloved community for all people, equally. Today that community is intersectional, diverse and ever growing. As our society changes culturally, socially and politically, it will be important to find new ways to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Join us in this discussion.
