"After the Storm" (2016)
Thu, 12 January 2017, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM MST
Calgary Cinematheque invites you to a screening of After the Storm.
At 7:00PM, as the last attendees take their seats, the main event will begin! Calgary Cinematheque is pleased to present After the Storm (2016), written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, as part of our CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA series.
AFTER THE STORM is the latest film from Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda. In all his films, Kore-eda always manages to depict the tensions and relationships within a family with plenty of beauty, intelligence and genuine emotions. AFTER THE STORM continues this mature exploration of family dynamics and depicts how individual family members cope after a divorce.
In After the Storm, Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is a prize winning novelist who is down on his luck. He hasn’t finished his second book and has to work as a private detective to pay his bills. He is divorced from his wife but is determined to find a way to be relevant in his son’s life again. Yet, he can barely pay for child support and loses any money he earns on gambling. Set in the outskirts of Tokyo, After the Storm uses a smart mix of humour and honesty to depict the unexpected paths people find themselves in.
The CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA series showcases the best films from around the world made by rising masters and established auteurs. The series offers a rare chance to view critically acclaimed works by directors who are pushing the boundaries of cinema. Over the last two seasons, this series has screened works by directors from Brazil, Canada, Iran, Mexico, Philippines, Romania, South Korea, Taiwan, UK and USA. This season the series has already shown a Canadian/Norwegian co-production and a Chinese film. In early 2017, the series will feature critical works hailing from Japan, France and Iran. Plus, there are two works yet to be announced.
