Description

Join us for a day of learning and networking as we host four AAA/AIA accredited sessions and tradeshow style demonstrations throughout the day.

Register for each session individually and come and go as your day permits.

There will be a wine and cheese from 3:00pm-5:00pm following the last AIA Session.

Presentation Topics:

8:00AM - Linear Lighting Frenzy
Presenter: Rob Empfield - Prudential Lighting

1 LU
60 Minutes

The lighting industry continues to seek inventive ways to make light more efficient and ultimately more appealing to vastly improve the user experience.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain how the drivers in the lighting specification process vary by the role of each key decision maker.
  2. Elaborate upon key trends in LED linear that are flourishing right now and their impact on the user experience.
  3. Describe the artistic inspiration behind veiled ambient lighting, its widespread aesthetic appeal, and how it’s enhancing the user experience.
  4. List two of the next wave of technological advances in LED linear lighting.

10:00AM - Plane Lighting - Understanding Our Responses to the Lighting of Architectural Surfaces
Presenter: Joseph R. (Zach) Zaharewicz, PE – The Lighting Quotient
1 AIA LU (Design Category)
60 Minutes

An examination of physiological and psychological responses to the lighting of architectural surfaces. Advantages of asymmetric luminaires in creating impactful, uniform lighting effects are also explored.

Topics: Physiological and psychological responses to illuminated surfaces and spaces; considerations for relating light sources to their target surfaces; attributes of asymmetric luminaires; and, factors influencing our perception of uniformity.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Research behind our responses to the lighting of architectural surfaces in our surround
  2. How different lighting solutions may be more or less in tune with the surface geometries they light
  3. Advantages of asymmetric luminaires in creating uniform effects across broad surfaces
  4. The impacts that brightness gradients and surface finishes have on our perception of uniformity

12:00pm - Inspired Architectural Downlighting
Presenter: Scott Roos - Acuity Brands
1 LU (also IDCEC approved)
90 Minutes

This presentation provides an overview of lighting design techniques and how to assess and compare luminaire performance characteristics to create inspired architectural downlighting in commercial interiors.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the role of downlighting, in conjunction with other luminaire types, in creating visually interesting spaces with multiple layers of light.
  2. Apply downlighting for uniform and non-uniform general illumination and high contrast accent lighting
  3. Apply downlighting to effectively light vertical surfaces
  4. Use spec sheet and photometric data to select, compare and identify the best downlight for use in a given application.

*Lunch will be provided, please advise dietary restrictions.

2:30pm - TM-30: The Science of Color Accuracy
Presenter: Adam Lamar – Soraa Inc.
1 LU
60 Minutes

CRI is the standard for color rendition, but suffers from issues:

  • Inaccuracy due to outdated color science
  • Lack of information (only one number to characterize color)

To address these issues, the IES formed a task group which created TM-30 and delivered to CIE which oversees CRI.

Learning Objectives:

  1. State of the Art Color Science + Accuracy
  2. TM-30 terms & visuals
  3. Why do we need TM-30? (CRI vs TM-30)
  4. Applying TM-30 for simple and complex design applications.
