Description

Justin Shaw

Acting on Instinct: An Introduction to the Actor’s Process

Open to all residents ages 16 and older

This week-long class aims to empower participants to take ownership of the craft of performance through a series of intensive exercises designed to build capacity of the artist. To build the capacity of a performance artist, whether it be on stage or on screen, there are a number of fundamental skills that require development in order to successfully achieve authenticity in performance. These skills are capable of being developed through the practice and repetition of exercises and activities that are accessible to artists, regardless of their experience level.

Justin Shaw is the Artistic Director of Theatre; Just Because. He is originally from Prince Edward Island, having graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a degree in History (Honours), and a double minor in English and Theatre Studies.

Shaw continued his studies in theatre while attending the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada’s Acting Program in Montreal. While training, Shaw also participated in the Playwrights Workshop Montreal Youth Unit for two years, developing a solo show entitled The Wrestling Play. This piece went on to win the Audience Selection Award in the 2017 Island Fringe Festival, and was ranked among the Top Theatre Productions in Your McMurray Magazine during its run in Alberta Culture Days.

Since assuming the role of Artistic Director of Theatre; Just Because in Wood Buffalo in May 2017, Shaw’s primary goal has been to cultivate the culture of empowerment amongst his fellow artists. Since arriving, Shaw has curated a series of workshops for adult and youth actors as part of Alberta Culture Days, appeared in Keyano’s productions of A Christmas Carol and Nurse Jane Goes To Hawaii, A Knight to Remember with Theatre; Just Because, and the original clown piece Mooda & Tula Go Camping, to which Shaw received the recognition of Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Production.
