Join Alberta Barley at the Lacombe Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC) on July 24. Hear from leading industry experts on new barley varieties, advancements in weed control, disease resistance and more.

Agronomy research extension through The Growing Point – Jeremy Boychyn, ABC

Introduction to FCDC – Flavio Capettini, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF)

10:00 am Morning sessions

Advances in spring and winter triticale – Mazen Aljarrah, AAF - A look at three recently released new winter triticale varieties that significantly out yield all triticale checks, and also show better forage quality and digestibility. Will also discuss two recently released spring triticale varieties.

Barley for forage production - Dr. Yadeta Kabeta and Linda Hunt, AAF - Forage-focused barley breeding, with enhanced palatability, digestibility, and nutritive value alongside regional adaptation.

New barley varieties- Dr. Pat Juskiw, Dr. Joseph Nyachiro, AAF - Newly released malting and feed/forage varieties, as well as a look at upcoming varieties.

Disease resistance - Dr. Kequan Xi, Dr. Krishan Kumar, Sasha Waterman, AAF - Hands on demonstration of disease on resistant and susceptible barley and wheat, covering the impacts of cereal diseases and why genetic resistance is an essential part of a management plan.

The influence of preceding legumes and nitrogen management on malt barley - Dr. Hiroshi Kubota, AAFC - The influence legumes have on the yield and quality of following malting barley crops.

Mitigating Herbicide Resistance - Dr. Breanne Tidemann, AAFC - Managing diverse weeds with a combination of cultural weed control methods including rotation, seeding rate, silage practices, and chaff collection.

Pulse fractionation and protein opportunities - Robyne Bowness Davidson AAF, Allison Ammeter, Pulse Canada, Nevin Rosaasen, Alberta Pulse Growers - The future of plant-based protein in Canada, opportunities we have in Western Canada, the direction of protein levels in our breeding lines, and agronomic practices for improved protein.

How to choose forage varieties- Dr. Vern Baron, AAFC - Using a spreadsheet calculator to compare barley, triticale, and oat varieties for forage use on the basis of estimated animal performance and economic outcomes.
