Event description

Description

Join the Office of Sustainability at MacEwan University for the Sustainability 201 Speaker Series featuring Kevin Taft.

Author and advocate Kevin Taft joins us to discuss the relationship between oil, democracy, and global warming. With more than four decades experience with the provincial government, including three terms in the legislature, Taft will speak about how systems of power and influence affect democracy in Alberta. What might the future hold for Alberta? Hear some of the challenges and opportunities facing our province in the age of global warming.

Kevin Taft is the author of five books, including Oil’s Deep State, published by Lorimer in 2017. His 2012 book Follow the Money was co-authored with Mel McMillan and Junaid Jahangir, and his 1997 book Shredding the Public Interest was recently called “…a seminal text in the history of critical thought in Alberta.” Taft served three terms in the Alberta legislature with the Alberta Liberal Party, and was Leader of the Official Opposition from 2004 to 2008, through two general elections. He has a PhD in Business from University of Warwick and is a distinguished research fellow at the Parkland Insitute at the University of Alberta, and served as a visiting fellow at Western Sydney University in Australia. Taft grew up in Edmonton, where he and his wife Jeanette still live. He is no longer involved in party politics, and is a frequent public speaker.
