Event description

Description

Alchemy is an evening that celebrates the power, humanity, and intensity of spoken word poetry, especially when it is combined with the sensitivity and emotional range that classical music can express. This evening of poetry features two of Canada's most well-respected spoken word artists, and musical contributions from Edmonton-based pianist Rebecca Parsons. Alchemy's featured poets are Titilope Sonuga and Brandon Wint.

Titilope Sonuga bio:

Titilope is an award winning poet, writer and performer who has graced stages across Nigeria and internationally. She was the winner of the 2011 Canadian Authors’ Association Emerging Writer Award for her first collection of poems, Down To Earth. Her spoken word album Mother Tongue was released in 2013 followed by a second collection of poetry, Abscess, in 2014. She performed alongside renowned poets Sonia Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, Yusef Komunyakaa and others, at the first spoken word showcase of the Achebe Colloquium on Africa at Brown University.

Brandon Wint bio:

Brandon Wint is a poet, spoken word artist and teacher who is devoted to the articulation of the beauty within the human condition. His intricately-rendered performance pieces present a passionate, sincere and whimsical version of humanity. His writing, performance, and pedagogical approach all affirm, in their different ways, that there is beauty to be found in the struggle, and solace to be found in sincerity-of-spirit. He is an artist who uses poetry to harness empathy within himself, and have each of his words, deeds, creations and performances reflect that empathy unambiguously. He is a two-time national champion slam poet, a nationally published writer, as well as arts-educator and curator of artistic events. He has shared stages with such creative luminaries as Shad, Arrested Development, K-OS, Bill Bissett and others.
