Alcohol Policy Interventions

Currently there is strong evidence for national and/or provincial level policy interventions that effectively decrease rates of alcohol consumption. However there is a need for more evidence regarding comprehensive public health strategies that are effective at the local level.

Data from systematic reviews, grey literature, a survey of Ontario public health units, and interviews with key informants have been synthesized to create a report with 14 recommendations for local public health action to reduce alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harms.

This report is the result of collaborative efforts among 13 public health units within Ontarioworking through a Locally Driven Collaborative Project funded through Public Health Ontario.

This webinar will outline the project objectives and methodology. Recommendations for local action and key areas for next steps willalso be shared.

Speakers

Melissa Hutchinson, Program Manager, Durham Region Health Department

During the 14 years that Melissa has been at Durham Region Health Department, she has worked in the areas of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention, Chronic Disease Prevention and most recently the Prevention of Injury and Substance Misuse. Melissa is a registered nurse who holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ryerson University and a Bachelor of Arts from Trent University. She is one of the co-leads for this project.

Emily Lester, Public Health Nurse, Durham Region Health Department

Emily has worked at Durham Region for one year in the Prevention of Injury and Substance Misuseprogram. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University.

Dina Chauhan, Public Health Nurse, Durham Region Health Department

During the year and a half that Dina has been at Durham Region Health Department, she has worked in the area of Prevention of Injury and Substance Misuse. Dina is a registered nurse who holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ryerson University.

• Gain knowledge of the Locally Driven Collaborative Project goals, objectives, methodology and results
• Increase understanding of the evidence supporting local public health action related to the topic of alcohol
• To gain an understanding of some fo the barriers and facilitators to health units in addressing alcohol and alcohol-related harms at the local level
