Event description

Description

The movement patterns we know and practice came from habit, with a vast majority of them influenced by watching those around us, those older than us - what we saw we copied, practiced and trained in to ourselves without understanding to recognize their inefficiencies. These habits are often unhealthy, causing poor movement patterns, unnecessary tension and chronic pain.

We were never taught about our body, how it moves, how to feel it, "asking how we experience our structure through internal sensation rather than external analysis.".

What is Alexander Technique?

Spatial-Awareness training with movement, releasing tension and reducing overcompensation patterns by learning how to soften, move with efficiency, effortlessly posture your body and use momentum to reduce tension and optimize performance, while reducing pain. It's a practice of self and body awareness based in a movement practice.

Founder Frederick Alexander "believed the individual's spatial self-awareness was related to psychological conditioning; questionably trained foundation habits of posture can be unsuitably added into procedural skills. Alexander observed that those whose goals justified it necessary to have trained themselves to overcompensate could not trust their judgment of physical orientation and required effort.".

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is beneficial for those with an interest in body awareness, for those who have body pain, poor balance or coordination, but also for performers, athletes, singers and dancers looking to unleash their body's ability to optimally perform.

What does a class look like?

Exploration of body movement and releasing tension will first start by practicing typical positions, like walking, standing and sitting. Holly Cinnamon will assess individual holding patterns and guide the class through correcting them, both common patterns and individual, spending time on teaching students how to notice when they are over compensating and moving with too much effort. Small adjustments and exercises will be applied during the 2 hours workshop so each student feels reacquainted with their body, how it feels when it moves.

What to expect?

A new found realization and awareness of the sensation of tension creation and release in movement and holding postures, when standing or sitting, for example. An appreciation for how your body is built to move with ease and what good, effortless posture feels like - avoiding the typical strain when 'trying to correct posture', instead understanding subtle adjustments to make for correcting ingrained postural and movements patterns.

What to wear / bring?

Wear comfortable clothing, like stretchy pants and cottons tops, and bring a water bottle with you. Fresh, filtered water is available at Reset Wellness for refills.

About the instructor:

Holly is a trained Alexander Technique instructor, yoga instructor, performing artist and theatre director. She would like to offer you an opportunity to learn more about the technique and deepen your awareness of yourself in a group setting. A “sensitive” person since birth, Holly has discovered strength in sensitivity and deep listening through her work as an AT teacher. She enjoys offering her students a space to rediscover themselves in the present moment, free themselves from unnecessary tension and judgment, and find joy in the gift of living in a body on this earth and moving with gratitude. Alexander Technique can offer a greater balance between effort and ease, between doing and non-doing, between action and attention. Holly is excited to share that with you!
