Event description

Description

Tango: classical artistry and ensemble paired with the rhythmic fire and wild abandon of the Latin spirit. These brilliantly accomplished performers draw from their eclectic backgrounds in Classical, Jazz, Latin, Eastern European folk music, and improvisation to exude technical virtuosity, playful spontaneity, and rhythmic vitality. They explore the richness of Argentinean music, beyond tango into folk music forms such as the Chacarera and Zamba, as well as tango compositions by Canadian composers Drew Jurecka and Robert Horvath.

As Rebekah Wolkstein says: “It's addictive to perform tango. It's vibrant music and it's relatable for audiences. They love it. They want to dance and they understand it on a visceral level. It encompasses every human emotion often several times in one piece alone!”

Highlights from Payadora’s past performances include sold-out shows at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto Music Festival at Heliconion Hall, and for the Canadian Opera Company's World Music Series at the Four Seasons Centre. In one of their many collaborative appearances, they performed a symphony show with the London Symphonia and were the featured guests with the Hannaford Street Silver Band in October, 2017 at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. Select performances in the summer of 2018 include a televised concert for the Ethnic Channel’s Group, and appearances at the Indian River Festival in PEI and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival.
