Event description

Description

Join us for an evening of journeys.

Through her book Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation, Monique Gray Smith explores how Canada’s relationship with its Indigenous people has suffered as a result of both the Residential School system and the lack of understanding of the historical and current impact of those schools. Healing and repairing that relationship requires education, awareness and increased understanding of the legacy and the impacts still being felt by Survivors and their families.

The other journey was that of a young man who set out to travel through the mountains. When his remains were discovered, roughly three hundred years after he was caught by a storm or other accident, his story had faded from even the long memory of the region’s people. First Nations elders decided to call the discovery Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį (Long Ago Person Found). What emerges in Richard Hebda's book, Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį, is not only a portrait of an individual and his world, but also a model for how diverse ways of knowing, in both scholarly and oral traditions, can complement each other to provide a new understanding of our complex histories.

The authors will read from and discuss their books. Further information: http://www.sidneyliteraryfestival.ca/
