Description

Friday Night Speaker Series

We welcome Andrew 'the bearded charmer' Forbes for a Video Discussion. The lines are blurring between video and digital photography in ways that are surprising both sides - from lenses to bodies to formats to distribution, there’s a whole new set of paradigms that are being developed as technologies integrate. Each is becoming more commonplace amongst the others’ scopes, but how does the technology translate form one medium to the other? What are the pitfalls and stumbling blocks as the manufacturers fight for control? Who stands to gain? Ultimately, I believe it’s the storyteller who’s now able to access an infinitely wider set of tools and redefining how to use them.

For the past twenty years, Andrew has been exploring visual storytelling as a cinematographer, artist, educator and more recently, as an interactive designer. His production experiences have taken him across Canada and around the world, with subjects as diverse as death-defying escapes in far-flung countries, the complicated political world of Turkish harems, (potentially) lycanthropic teenagers and fantastical stop-motion adventures in northern Saskatchewan. He’s fascinated by the power of images, loves experimenting with their possibilities and considers it both a privilege and a responsibility to develop distinctive interpretations of a story. He holds and MFA in Digital Futures from OCAD University and is an Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.

When not in production, Andrew’s other passion is exploring technology and story with students of all ages. Currently, he teaches advanced film production at the University of Winnipeg.

Our Friday Night Speaker Series presentations are free to attend but a donation of food for Winnipeg Harvest or a $10 minimum cash donation to Habitat for Hummanity is required at the door. Be generous!
