MIT App Inventor is an innovative beginner's introduction to programming and app creation that transforms the complex language of text-based coding into visual, drag-and-drop building blocks. The simple graphical interface grants even an inexperienced novice the ability to create a basic, fully functional app within an hour or less.
During this workshop, Dave Bowles, P.Eng. with 25+ years experience in industrial settings (IT, Engineering, Controls), and the founder of industrialwebapps.com Inc., will take us through a topic near and dear to his heart: making programming more accessible. As the father of two young and inquisitive ladies, Dave is constantly on the lookout for ways to keep his girls excited about technology, and he's happy to share that excitement with us. The session will involve a quick introduction to App Inventor 2 and for those with an Android device they will be able to build working applications that make use of speech-to-text, GPS and various other cool features.
The presentation will be beginner level: to participate will assume zero familiarity with coding. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops. A handful of desktop computers will be available in the space. At the end of this exercise, participants will have completed a small Android App of their own. It is perfectly acceptable/encouraged to come and watch without participating.
Registration is free, we simply need to track numbers for our food orders. If you have any questions, feel free to contact any representative of The Cube at Lambton College. If you are unsure if you will be able to attend, feel free to register as late as 4:00pm on the day of the event.
