About this event
Tackling issues of power and oppression in psychological or mental health practice it is often overwhelming. It is difficult to know where to begin! This course will give you the foundation you need to go beyond cultural competence and incorporate how issues of power and oppression inform and heavily contribute to the suffering of people who benefit from psychological research and practice. We will learn about the impact of culture, prejudice, discrimination. We will learn about how systems of power currently in place in Western cultures have created and currently maintain oppression across different people groups. We will learn about the role of power-over ideologies and their impact on the history and current practice of psychology and how to begin dismantling ideologies that harm us all.
Dr. Alana Tappin, C.Psych is a registered psychologist in Ontario, Canada. She specializes in helping marginalized and racialized persons deal with the psychological impact of oppression and racial trauma in their lives.
