About this Event

UAlberta’s Applied Land Use Planning Program in the Faculty of Extension is pleased to be hosting our first Planning Symposium in the heart of downtown Edmonton.

This year's event will feature practitioner experts who will be speaking to current and relevant planning topics.

Our presenters have diverse backgrounds in the field of planning, come with local and international expertise, and are ready for the opportunity to share their knowledge and answer your challenging questions.

Glinis Buffalo RPP, MCIP (LinkedIn)

The Importance of Land Based Learning through an Indigenous Lens

Glinis Buffalo is from Samson Cree Nation and has two children. Glinis is a Planning Lead with AECOM, and is a Registered Professional Planner with over 15 years of experience within the public and private sector. Her background includes indigenous planning, municipal planning, environmental assessment, extensive community engagement and supporting women in leadership.

Robert Lipka, RPP, MCIP (LinkedIn)

Universal Design: Helping to make Edmonton a better place for everyone

Robert is currently a Principal Urban Designer with the City of Edmonton who has 20+ years working in various cities and countries providing designs and reviews that focus on urban design, universal design and crime prevention through environmental design. He has worked on projects of various scales including, but not limited to, master planned communities, transit oriented developments and corridor studies. At the City, he provides advice/support on development applications, policy documents (City Plan), public transport (LRT) projects, street design, traffic safety and much more.

Craig Walker, RPP, MCIP (LinkedIn)

Bus Network Redesign Project

Craig has a unique, well-rounded planning background that spans over 13 years. He has Canadian and international experience in urban and rural contexts, private and public sector corporations, current and long-range disciplines related to land use, transportation, transit and policy. Although he now works in the City of Edmonton's Subdivision Planning Unit, Craig spent much of last year supporting the Bus Network Redesign project with Edmonton Transit Service, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, with many lessons learned which are applicable to other planning disciplines.

Community/Strategic Plans: a Case Study from Dovercourt, Edmonton

Avid urbanist and community builder, Chelsey Jersak has led land use planning and regulatory projects in central Alberta and the Alberta capital region in the public and private sectors since 2007. She is the founder and principal of Situate, a boutique urban planning firm based in Edmonton offering rezoning, permitting, subdivision and project management services for awesome infill projects.
