Arctic Stories (Aren’t Just for Kids)

Sunday, December 2nd at 2pm

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is pleased to welcome Inuit storyteller Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak for a special afternoon of Arctic Stories. Join us on Sunday, December 2nd at 2pm for this unique salon style storytelling event intended for all ages.

Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak grew up in Repulse Bay, NWT (now Nunavut) and now splits his time between Sooke, BC and Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. During his childhood, his family travelled by dog sled, living a traditional Inuit lifestyle. He is an award-winning author of twelve children’s books and was a co-writer of A Promise is a Promise (with Robert Munsch).

This will be an unforgettable afternoon as two old friends gather in Vancouver to share stories and memories of life in the Arctic.

Arctic Stories is part of the Tales of the Northwest Passage Speaker Series, celebrating 90 years of Adventure onboard the St. Roch. Built in British Columbia, named after a parish in Quebec, captained by a Norwegian immigrant, crewed by farm boys from across the country, and helped by the Inuit, the RCMP St. Roch was the first vessel to sail the Northwest Passage from west to east (1940-1942), the first to complete the passage in one season (1944), and the first to circumnavigate North America.

In the early part of the 20th century St. Roch was one of the only ships in service in the Arctic. It was her job to provide remote communities and RCMP detachments with fuel, supplies, mail, and transportation. The RCMP was, for a long time, the only extension of the Canadian government in the north. St. Roch became instrumental in establishing Canadian sovereignty in this remote region of the world.

The Vancouver Maritime Museum is a world-leading maritime museum and a centre for dialogue, education and research regarding the maritime heritage of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.
