Short Bio

Prof. Dr. Ömer Aydan was born in 1955, and studied Mining Engineering at the İstanbul Technical University, Turkey (B.Sc., 1979), Rock Mechanics and Excavation Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (M.Sc., 1982), and finally received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Nagoya University, Japan in 1989. He worked at Nagoya University as a research associate (1987-1991), and at the Department of Marine Civil Engineering at Tokai University, first as Assistant Professor (1991-1993), then as Associate Professor (1993-2001), and finally as Professor (2001-2010). He then became Professor of the Institute of Oceanic Research and Development at Tokai University, and he moved to Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Ryukyus (Nishihara, Okinawa, Japan) as the professor of Material Science and he retired at the end of March of 2020 as Emeritus Professor. He serves ISRM Vice-President at Large for the 2019-2023 period.

Prof. Dr. Aydan was involved in the establishment of Rock Dynamics Commission of ISRM and participated at the Workshop in 2009, which paved the way for RocDyn Symposium Series. He established the Rock Dynamics Commission of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2013 and led the commission for two-periods (6 year), and he is still a member as well as the advisor of the commission. This commission organized a special session on Earthquakes in RocDyn-3 held in Trondheim in 2018. He organized 2019 Rock Dynamics Summit in Okinawa as a Congress-like event of ISRM. He authored “Rock Dynamics” published by CRC Press as a ISRM Book Series No.3 in 2018. He is also the author of or one of the authors of more than 600 scientific papers and the author of eight international books on rock mechanics, and he co-authored five more international books.

Abstract

Modern Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (RMRE) was established in 1966. Since then, this discipline expanded the initial topics of interest and it has become a major discipline of science and engineering. This presentation would cover the following topics: Testing, modelling and applications of Rock Dynamics. Some emphasis is given to the effect of aspect ratio, new innovations of bending, double shearing of rocks as well as rock discontinuities. Furthermore, dynamic testing of bonding strength of steel-grout interface of rockbolts/rock anchors under pull-out and push-out conditions. The recent experimental, theoretical and numerical studies on dynamic stability of slopes and underground openings in rock mass with various discontinuity patterns including hexagonal jointing. Furthermore, the estimation of strong motions induced by earthquakes from Rock Mechanistic view point is explained.
