Art to Heal a Grieving Heart
Re-Imagining the Holidays after Loss: A Seasonal Art Therapy Retreat
If you have suffered the loss of a loved one, recently or in the past, or are caring for someone at the end of their life, you may be feeling some anxiety, sadness, stress, or perhaps even dread about the coming holiday season.
For those who are grieving, December can be a very difficult time of the year. We are bombarded with hundreds of commercial messages, dripping with nostalgia, insisting we be happy and joyful this month. During a period of grief, this can be excruciating. The result is often that this entire season can be experienced as a minefield of memories, family tensions, and emotions from every end of the spectrum.
Open Hearth Studio offers you an afternoon apart from the intensity of the season, to be nurtured in an atmosphere of acceptance, and to gently discover what you need most during this winter season. Our afternoon will include time for solitude and sharing, writing and art making. We will write and create from our hearts, and for our hearts, with the intention to be accepting of what comes.
At this retreat you will:
Connect deeply with yourself so you can discover exactly what you need to avoid emotional overwhelm this holiday season.
Learn how to communicate with family and friends about holiday expectations so you can make plans and decisions without defensiveness or guilt.
Create a concrete self-care plan for the season to help you stay grounded and moving forward in your healing even in the midst of the holiday hype.
What if I WANT to participate in all the holiday celebrations this year?
This isn’t a day for those who specifically either love or hate the holidays; it’s to support you in discovering your own needs. You may already have a hunch that you want to be busy, or the opposite. In the end, what will work for you will be unique to you.
What if I don’t celebrate Christmas?
You are welcome whether you observe any or no religious holidays, from any faith tradition. This time of year bombards all of us with expectations and assumptions regardless of our intentions to observe a particular holiday. The principles we will explore will apply just as well for the smaller, intimate “holy” days of individual relationships, like birthdays, anniversaries, or other important moments.
What if I am not good at art or drawing? Is this still a good workshop for me?
What we create in this day is for us alone, like a journal or diary entry. While something beautiful MAY come from it, we do it not to show to anyone else, or to judge it for its skillfulness. You may end up wanting to share your discoveries with someone close to you afterwards, but please don’t try to use this time to make a gift for someone else! This is your time.
