Event description

Description

What do neural networks do? Can AI be creative? How do DJs create? Can we create mathematical representations of music? These are some of the questions we explore in the next Terminal Tech Talk. Learn more about the art of training deep generative models in the context of large scale systems and enormous datasets.

We will explore how sound can be processed mathematically and explain what occurs when the human brain processes sound. Machine learning expert Thor Jonsson will explain AI in terms of probabilistic models and examples of what can be done using this framework. We'll also touch on different tasks in natural language processing, computer vision and audio.

Hors d'oeuvres, drinks and a great presentation will be served on July 25th at 5:30PM.

Of course, as always, all are welcome!

FORMAT:

  • 5:30PM – VIPs and guests arrive
  • 5:30PM – Drinks & hors d'oeuvres
  • 6:00PM – Presentation begins
  • 7:00PM – Event wraps up

About the speaker Thor Jonsson:

Thor Jonsson is the machine learning lead at Rave, a Waterloo-based AI company that is focused on creating the world's best artificial intelligence DJ. Thor grew up in the countryside of Eyjafjörður in North Iceland and was an active member of the underground music scene in Akureyri until five years ago.

Thor studied pure mathematics in Reykjavík at the University of Iceland and published research in computational quantum physics on the time evolution of quantum systems towards a steady-state with Prof. Vidar Gudmundsson.

In the past few years, Thor has trained neural networks under the guidance of Prof. Thomas Philipsson, Prof. Graham Taylor and Prof. David Duvenaud, for a variety of different tasks in Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and Audio.

Thor's main focus is on the art of training deep generative models in the context of large scale systems and enormous datasets.
