Join us Saturday, March 25th at 2 pm for a conversation with artist Christina Leslie.

Christina Leslie is an artist based in Toronto. Much of her photographic practice revolves around the themes of de-colonialism, identity, immigration, issues of marginalization, history, memory, race, and her West Indian heritage. She often utilizes text and alternative and historical photographic processes to produce her photographs.

Fascinated by the tactility of sugar and the history of sugar in the Caribbean, Leslie produced a series of photographs created from sugar.

Sugar Coat is comprised of white sugar-based photographic emulsions. Leslie created each image using a sugar solution she concocted with her own personal archives of Jamaica and new images constructed using models, costumes, and props.

The images are only visible when backlit. The photograph is then transformed into a stained-glass-like image that acts as a collectible, artefact, and time-sensitive historical record. She then rephotographed the emulsions to turn them back to a two-dimensional object, which allows the artworks to be exhibited in two distinct ways. This exhibition features both the emulsions as seen in the lightbox and the remaining rephotographed versions, printed on Sugar Cane Paper.

In this talk we will explore her practice, materiality, and her current exhibition Sugar Coat.

Christina Leslie's exhibition, Sugar Coat, will run from March 16th to April 15th.

Presented in partnership with Stephen Bulger Gallery with support from Honda Canada Foundation.
