Description

THE ARTS-BASED RESEARCH STUDIO ARTIST IN RESIDENCE POGRAM PRESENTS: Reflections from the End of the Spool

In this presentation I will provide an overview of some lessons learned while working on my “Tangled” portrait series in string. From the process of approaching subjects, creating the portraits themselves, and reading and reflection on related themes, the role of human interaction in the formation of who we are as individuals will be examined:

When one makes a mark with ink, there is something controlled and final about it. But when one takes a piece of string to make a line, that line can be played with…

…Along with the opportunity for play comes a loss of control, an opening for spontaneity. Though hands guide the direction of the string, in the last moment before it settles on a surface it twists and curls with its own agenda.. Not only is working with string more intimate than working with many other materials, it also seems more reciprocal.
