Event description

Description

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide intervention and safety planning for people age 16 or older. In the workshop, you will learn to:

  • Recognize people at risk of suicide
  • Talk to them, hear their stories and understand their situations, then
  • Help them keep safe and develop an effective personal safety plan; and
  • Connect them to community supports and resources

ASIST and safeTALK (1/2 day suicide alertness training) are suicide prevention workshops offered by the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Community Gatekeeper Training Project. Community Gatekeepers are in the unique position of being able to help prevent suicide and help save the lives of people in their community.

The Gatekeeper Training Project is funded by the BC Ministry of Health. The Project goal is to train 20,000 people in suicide prevention throughout the province. Your participation can help us make this happen.

PLEASE NOTE:

Talking about suicide can be difficult, especially if you have recently been impacted by a suicide attempt or death. Healing from these tragic events can take months or years, so we encourage you to take time for healing before attending a suicide intervention training.

If you have experienced a suicide death, healing support is available at BC Bereavement Helpline 1-877-779-2223, and www.bcbereavementhelpline.com. You can also access information and support at: Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, www.suicideprevention.ca/grieving/suicide-grief/
