Event description
Potential of Amendments and Management Practices in Preventing Nutrient Deficiencies for Sustainable Organic Crop Production

About this event

Dr. Sukhdev Malhi presents his findings for his studies of the addition of amendments and different management practices to help prevent nutrient deficiencies during sustainable organic crop productions.

Dr. Malhi has more than 40 years of experience in field research on soil, crop and nutrient management for cereals and other crops under direct seeding, and for perennial forage crops.

His research work included:

o Measurement of N mineralization from native soil N, nitrification of fall-applied N over the winter and its loss in early spring, timing and extent of denitrification in many cropping systems and soil types;

o Development/investigation of methods to prevent nutrient losses and improve fertilizer use efficiency for various crops;

o Research on influence of long-term fertilization, tillage and crop residues, rotations, landscape, land use, pastureland/hayland termination methods and soil-climatic zone on soil quality, N and C cycling, C sequestration, N storage in soil and greenhouse gas emissions in soil-plant systems;

o Effects of simulated erosion on soil properties and crop productivity;

o Best time of soil sampling for proper N and P fertilizer recommendations; and

o Optimization of canola yields with balanced fertilization.
