Event description
Putting developers at the heart of financial services, and customers in control of their data.

About this Event

Join us for a weekend of collaboration, connection, and creative brainstorming as we embark on a journey to educate and elevate the conversation about open finance and demonstrate to Canadians the power and possibilities of APIs and open data within the banking industry.

Collaborating across borders and representing a broad cross section of partners, the 2019 Open Data Hackathon brings together Canada’s finest minds in software development, fintech, design and other disciplines to foster innovation and adoption of open data.

Help us define the future of financial services - in Alberta, and across the world.

How it works

Interested in participating? Great. Here’s how:

  1. Join the slack channel. It's really important that you do, because this is where you’ll be able to connect with other participants, form your team, ask questions and access data.
  2. Register online. NOTE: You can register your team, OR register as an individual and form a team at a later date.
  3. Watch for our emails. We’ll be releasing more information as the event draws nearer, including important updates and information on pre-event workshops.

Once you’ve joined our Slack channel, you can form teams of up to 8 people to solve whatever problem you’re interested in. We’ll host some networking events and meetups leading up to the event so you can get to know your fellow participants and begin forming teams.

**You have up until 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 8 to register your team to present.**

The Challenge

Unleash the power of data, APIs & open finance to create new customer experiences, revenue models and industry ecosystems. Show a unique and tangible use case that addresses one of the following challenges:

  1. A healthier you - How can we support Albertans in their quest for a mentally and physically healthier life? Utilizing financial data, can you identify a person's mental states and motivators to support sustained action towards healthier living?
  2. Make your investment - In today's world, in every aspect of our life, we demand tailor-made offers. Yet investments can be a complicated option. How might you create a fresh, personalized experience for investments?
  3. Preparing for longevity – Humans are living longer than ever before -- but can we afford it? There are a number of factors contributing to unpreparedness in the face of retirement. Using varied financial data, develop solutions that facilitate and incentivize pension savings for individuals.
  4. Embracing sustainability - Use financial behaviour to help save the planet. Environmental mindfulness and sustainability influence customers' decisions more than ever before. Knowing this, how can we inspire individuals and corporations to contribute to sustainable environmental growth?
  5. Megatrends - We’ve seen the rise of megatrends in the industry, such as cryptocurrency, quantum, and blockchain. With trends like these as the foundation, develop revolutionary solutions that will change the world of banking as we know it today.

Teams will have access to synthesized data designed to mimic core banking data, released through APIs from ATB and presenting sponsors, to solve this challenge.
