Event description
The Atlantic Idea Camp will explore what it means to apply open smart city approaches to real world challenges in small communities.

About this Event

Through high-impact keynotes, panels and small group discussions, the Atlantic Idea Camp, hosted by the City of Mount Pearl and co-organized by Evergreen, Canadian Urban Institute and ICF Canada, will explore what it means to apply open smart city approaches to real-world challenges and why small communities are well-positioned to implement smart solutions.

This event will bring together peers working in municipalities and Indigenous communities in Atlantic Canada alongside industry and government experts to learn how to apply different open smart city approaches to their local contexts, and discuss the types of information, research, or partners that would be useful to advancing this type of work in communities across the East Coast Provinces. Participants will hear from municipal leaders from across the country:

  • Leon de Vreede, Sustainability Planner, Town of Bridgewater, NS
  • Mitch Thomson, Executive Director, Olds Institute for Community and Regional Development, Olds, AB
  • Dan Mathieson, Mayor, Stratford, ON
  • Larry Shaw, CEO, Ignite Fredericton and Knowledge Park Inc, Fredericton, NB

What you’ll learn

  1. The key components of an open smart city, what you need to get started and why open smart approaches are critical to ensuring communities of all sizes are placed at the centre of emerging urban innovations.
  2. How other small communities across Canada are creating their open smart city: their lessons learned and keys to success.

Who you’ll meet

  1. Your peers and counterparts working in municipalities and Indigenous communities across Atlantic Canada.
  2. Experts in the areas of open smart cities, smart city partnerships, and how small communities can benefit from smart city approaches.
