Event description

An enduringly popular operetta, The Mikado’s topsy-turvy tale and self-deprecating humour satirises the social norms of etiquette and bureaucracy in Victorian England.

The Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society is proud to present a vibrant new staging that will creatively intertwine Gilbert’s Victorian London with his imagined Japan.

Singers of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to audition for this reinvigorated interpretation of a much-loved classic.

When considering The Mikado for this year's production, the VGSS Board felt it was essential to present it in a culturally sensitive way while remaining true to Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedy and social comment.

Director Heather-Elayne Day brought to the Board an exciting vision for The Mikado, inspired by a production of the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, the pre-eminent presenters of G&S operetta in the United States.

After consulting with Asian-American arts leaders to build an inclusive cast and creative team, NYGASP created a prologue that sets the scene in the context of Gilbert and Sullivan's Victorian London, all while upholding The Mikado’s characters, storytelling, themes and satire of human nature. In the prologue, real-life people in Gilbert and Sullivan's world — the actors of the D'Oyly Carte company and D’Oyly Carte himself — interact with the writing duo as they are planning their next show. These friends and colleagues come to life in Gilbert's imagination as he dreams them into the characters of his next great production — The Mikado.

The Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be the first company to license this new prologue for our production.
